The Ear - Launch Party at Gallery Gachet
0 Comments Su-An was here on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 2:16 PM.
We were at Gallery Gachet last week celebrating the launch of their new arts and literary journal - The Ear.
The Ear is published three times a year by Gachet Publications, an arm of Gallery Gachet. Its mandate is to provide a space for marginalized, professional artists to publish their work. Each journal will feature literary and visual contributions; stories, poems, essays, photography, drawings and paintings. This issue’s theme is “atypical perspectives”, a celebration of work that looks at reality through diverse perceptions. Read the bios of contributing artists here.
It was a night of good music and amazing talent! The line-up included a sing-a-long by Vanessa Richards, performances by DB Buxton, Misha-Q, The Shottas and a special guest appearance by C.R Avery.
And of course, what is a party without Cheese Photobooths? Here's a shout-out to Cameron! We love your photobooth. Next time we will attempt to break your record again, we only managed 10 in the end.
Peace out!

DB Buxton and his sweet guitar!
I couldn't figure out why he would tune it so many times while he was playing and remember thinking to myself that this guitar must be really old. It produces quite a unique sound nonetheless, you gotta spare a few minutes and take a listen to his music here.

The multi-talented slam poet C.R. Avery who combines poetry with beat-boxing and blues. CBC Radio 3 describes him as an "electrifying performer". It was a treat to watch him live.
The Motion Sickness Animation Collective also contributed that night with projected visuals which accompanied the performance of Misha-Q and The Shottas. Here is a short clip:Visuals at Gallery Gachet from The Motion Sickness Collective on Vimeo.

On the weekend members of Roy Collective participated and attended "12 hour vigil" a project curated by Stephanie Ellis which speaks to the arts funding cuts.
The project was setup so an artist would show their work every hour. Their was a tent setup outside of the art gallery on Robson St. Josh showed his work at 11 am on Saturday, and Gillian showed hers at noon to one pm.

Liam Gillick - Fall Speaker Series at Emily Carr University
0 Comments Su-An was here on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 9:30 AM.We attended a talk by British artist, Liam Gillick, earlier this week. He is one of the 5 artists featured in this year's Fall Speaker Series at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Gillick is a New York and London-based artist who emerged in the 1990s in the midst of paradigmatic political and cultural change. In the past two decades, he has developed a highly influential artistic practice around a discursive model that complicates object production and raises key social questions.
Solo exhibitions include The Museum of Modern Art, 2003; Palais de Tokyo, 2005; Witte de With, 2008. Group exhibitions include the documenta X 1997; Guggenheim Museum, 2004; 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009.
Gillick engages in writing, design, film and installation. He showed slides of his work based on a chronological time line and talked about a constant revisiting of themes in his art practice. Some of these include the idea of parallel histories, shifting the order of representation and investigating principals of production.
"Art is a convenient term for a mid-space location where you don't need cultural permission to carry out certain corrective tasks in relation to society in general. There are a number of keys to understanding my work; one is distraction. ... What I like about the position of an artist is that you might start out intending to be a DJ but end up cleaning the floor with vodka and glitter instead." - Liam Gillick
To read more about Gillick's work, please click here for an essay written by The Museum of Modern Art.
HEALTH is a noise rock band consisting of four members including Benjamin Jared Miller, Jake Duzsik, John Famiglietti, and Jupiter Keyes. All are from different cities including Seattle, San Diego, and their current home base, Los Angeles.

Roy was at "sights / lights / sounds" + Emily Carr Media Pubnight!

We were at W2 this past Friday listening in on an artist talk by Barcelona-based artist-in-residence, Antoni Abad.
Abad talked about a recent project which involves marginalized people around the world (Geneva, Sao Paolo, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, the Sahara Desert and elsewhere). His megafone.net program uses technology to identify major cultural and community points that act as barriers to self-representation.
The Mobile*Native collaborative project connecting W2 and Megafone.net engages local First Nations youth in digital media expression as citizen ethnographers. In using the internet and new technology, the project aims to give voice and visibility to groups that previously had no or little truthful presence in the media.
We headed over to Emily Carr after this to check out this year's Media Pubnight Fundraiser. Sadly, it ended earlier than we thought..
It was a good thing there were still people around... we bumped into many familiar faces and had a good time catching up with old classmates and teachers!
